In informational texts, students need to be able to identify the important information in order to write summaries and sift through the potentially distracting supporting details, description, and narration. In non-fiction texts, "comprehension ABOUT text" features - like headers - often foreshadow the important ideas. Therefore, with student awareness of text structure features and a knowledge base of strategies to apply to the text to sort the main ideas from the supporting details, student "comprehension WITHIN text" can be achieved.
