BEANIE BABY DECODING STRATEGIES
As an anchor chart for fix-up strategies when students self-monitor and recognize that they need to decode an unknown vocabulary word, the eight decoding strategies encourage students to be independent readers. EAGLE EYE - Look at the Pictures for Clues.
CHUNKY MONKEY - Chunk the Word: Look for word chunk. Look for word part.
FLIPPY DOLPHIN - Flip the Vowel Sound: Try the other vowel sound if it doesn't sound right. Flip a short sound into a long sound or vice versa.
TRYIN' LION - Try It Again: Try to reread. Try a new word.
LIPS THE FISH - Get Your Lips Ready: Say first sounds. Read and say it again.
SKIPPY FROG - Skip It Skip It: Skip the word. Read to the end. Hop back and read it.
STRETCHY SNAKE - Stretch It Out: Stretch the word out. Put sounds together.
HELPFUL KANGAROO - Ask for Help:Ask for help after you've tried the other strategies.
