FIX-UP BEAR
This teacher introduced elementary students to reading fix-up strategies - to be used when they recognize that they are confused via self-monitoring - through a tangible stuffed bear and an anchor chart. After formally introducing the bear - "everyone say 'hi'" - teachers should explain to students how every reader has a Fix-Up Bear living in his/her brain to help them understand when they need help with reading and what to do in that situation. The anchor chart, as pictured to the left in a Fix-Up Bear station, discusses three main fix-up strategies. This approach appeals to visual learners and gives students a concrete reference point for thinking about fix-up self-monitoring strategies. Noren, L. (2011, Sept 4).
