Having the ability to summarize a text that just read is a significant part of comprehension within text. "A summary reconstructs the essence of the text. The important information is there, but the writer is highly selective, including only that which is necessary" (p. 474).When summarizing a text, a reader is essentially pulling out the most important and useful information to be able remember the main meaning of the text. Some beneficial strategies that readers can use to help summarize texts that they are reading are by using pictures, graphic organizers and generating their schema and previous experiences to make connections.
